Writer's Workshop
Our students are learning to see themselves as writers. We study the author's craft as we practice planning, composing, revising and as we share our work.
We are working on our poetry anthologies.

Language and Word Study
Based on the work of Patricia Cunningham and Dorothy Hall
High-frequency words (word wall words)- These words will be displayed on a word wall in the classroom and a personal word wall chart. Students will be held accountable for spelling word wall words correctly on all assignments. There are five critical goals for our word wall instruction:
- Teach students the correct spelling for high-frequency, often irregularly spelled words. (Word Wall)
- Improve the students’ ability to decode texts based on patterns in words they already know (Using Words You Know activities, Making Words activities)
- Teach students to develop a visual checking system and to use a dictionary to recognize spelling patterns and common exceptions to those patterns (Word sorts and hunts, reading/writing rhymes).
- Teach students to identify polysyllabic words, and to break them up into root words, bases, prefixes and suffixes.
- To encourage students to apply their word knowledge while reading and writing (Guess the Covered Word)
